As of July 13, 2024, people will be pedaling along the old railroad trackbed to the Carnia train station, not far from Venzone. There are still a couple of kilometers left to pedal on a regional road with a wide platform before reaching the historic center of Venzone. From November to April each year the Alpe Adria cyclovia is closed from Tarvisio to Venzone.
Route type: mostly downhill or flat linear route with very little cycling difficulty. Much of it on bike path or paved secondary roads with no traffic; several sections on good dirt roads.
Public-transport-friendly
Intermodal transportation with bicycle in tow:
The Alpe Adria bikeway is very well served by intermodal transportation, both train and bus.
TheMICOTRA trainis a special international, intermodal convoy between Udine and Villach (A) and can carry more than 70 bicycles in special cars (reservations required). It makes two daily round trips and in summer extends its run to Gorizia and Trieste.
Free mandatory reservation on the Mi.Co.Tra Udine / Trieste - Villach train. From 2024, reservation for bicycles and simultaneous purchase of a bike ticket is mandatory, exclusively by accessing https://www.obb-italia.com/it/ or via APP. Exclusively for routes in Friuli Venezia Giulia it should be noted that, to proceed with the bicycle reservation, it is necessary to deselect the passenger, which the system enters automatically, and activate the bicycle selection only. The bicycle fare is € 1.70 in Friuli Venezia Giulia and is valid one way and not daily.
Grado, on the other hand, is served by the BiciBus, a bus with an enclosed trolley for 40 bicycles in tow, which operates in spring and summer on the Udine-Palmanova-Cervignano-Grado route with several runs on weekends; in July and August runs daily.
Tarvisio: A23 Palmanova-Tarvisio exit Tarvisio. Follow directions to the centre.
Grado: A4 Turin-Trieste exit Palmanova. Follow SR352 to Grado.
