Challenging loop hike leading to Casera Montelonga where to appreciate the splendid panorama that opens to the peaks of Raut, Castello, Resettum.
Depart from the PromoTurismoFVG Infopoint and turn left onto Via Collalto. Continue uphill on Via Collalto until you come to the electricity box on the left side of the road. Follow the Passeggiata delle Malghe signs and the red-and-white markings, entering the beech forest. When you reach the large sinkhole, cross the forestry road and continue toward Casera Caseratte.
Pay attention to the signs. Enter, on the left, CAI path 985 that, slightly uphill between meadows and beech trees, passes below Casera Valfredda. Past a small fork, the path continues on a pleasant descent to the junction with CAI 988. Turn right and continue on CAI 988 to Casera di Giais, The long traverse runs on the south side of the Cavallo group, offering wide views of the Friulian plain and blooms of rare species. Once past the casera, continue on the common CAI 988-CAI 986 section, following the signs. This section is the most intact on the plateau because it is beaten by few hikers. The forest opens up into wide clearings. Sinkholes and sinkholes, typical of the karst landscape, appear in places. When you reach the next fork, take CAI986 until you reach CAI 987, which you follow to the left for a short distance.
Finally, take CAI 970, again on the left, thus reaching Casera Montelonga. The splendid panorama opens onto the peaks of Raut, Castello, Resettum, Duranno and the Ampezzo Dolomites. From the casera take CAI 971, which crosses the beech and fir forest in modest ups and downs. Observing the vegetation reveals signs of the sudden changes in the microclimate. The first section follows the forest road, then leaves it. Keep on CAI 971 until you reach a plateau.
Continue briefly along CAI 971 and then turn left along the forestry and find yourself back at the large sinkhole. Walk back along the last section of the Malghe Walk to return to Collalto and the starting point.
