A bike ride along the canals around Udine

The trail following the irrigation canals is a pedestrian and cycle path that starts from Molin Nuovo (Udine Nord) and goes as far as Reana del Rojale, following the courses of the characteristic irrigation canals, the channels that take water from the Torre torrent and direct it to Udine and Cividale. Along the course of the canals, mills, sluices and bridges have been built up over the years for agricultural purposes, many of which can still be seen today. These elements make the route very pleasant: the water refreshes the view, and the vegetation around is very green even in the torrid summer. Moreover the reflections on the water create romantic landscapes, thanks to the bridges and the mills. The irrigation canals in Udine seem to have been used since the beginning of the 1700s. There used to be large water wheels on them that operated some mills and spinning mills, feeding power to a variety activities, especially in the area of ??Borgo Grazzano and Borgo Gemona. The water was fresh and clean, and considered to be drinkable, so much so that there was a saying: “lâ a cjoli l’aghe in te roe” (trans: go and get water from the irrigation canal). The route runs between Molin Nuovo (Udine Nord), Cavalicco, Adegliacco, Rizzolo, Valle, Vergnacco, Zompitta and Reana del Roiale for a total of only 10 km, which makes 20 km round trip: a distance suitable for everyone, especially by bike! We conveniently parked at the Terminal Nord shopping centre, and from here we followed a stretch of road to the back of the shopping centre. At the roundabout, we turned left (into via Molin Nuovo) and from here went straight to via della Roggia. The route starts from here: behind a small rest area, we follow the first canal, with lilac-coloured bushes the colour of lavender that create reflections on the water. From here you continue straight on until you reach the fitness area and the Park of Adegliacco with its mill. From here on, the route is marked by signs indicating “Passeggiata delle Rogge” and you will also find numerous picnic areas!
