Ski mountaineering at Forca de La Val, Sella Nevea and Chiusaforte

One beautiful day in February I take a day’s holiday to go skiing off-piste, and head alone to Sella Nevea, a place that offers various ski-mountaineering excursions and which I know very well. I decide to stay in the sun given the low temperatures and face the climb that leads to Forca de La Val at 2350m above sea level between the Modeon del Buinz and the Cima Della Puartate. I park the car in the car park at the foot of the now former black slope of Sella Nevea, put on my boots and skis with skins, rucksack on my shoulders and head up the forest road that leads to Casera Cregnedul di Sopra. This is reached after about 3.1km and 350m climb along the road that offers a beautiful view of the Canin, Forato, Poviz and Robon peaks in addition to the valley of the Predil lake. I leave the forest track and the hut on the left, and enter the pine forest behind, rising higher. Here the valley opens in all its beauty, illuminated by the sun’s rays that are now high in the blue sky. From this point on, the trip gains in consistency and the climb becomes increasingly challenging: no longer going straight, I start to “zigzag” to reduce the angle but the path lengthen ... I avoid the remains of earlier avalanches to reach the top of the valley, close to the via ferrata cables of the famous Ceria Merlone path, from where it is possible to gain a glimpse of the opposite slope towards Val Dogna and Saisera. I take the ritual picture at the top, tighten the boots, remove the skins from skis and get ready to make a beautiful descent on fresh snow, while watching the last ski mountaineers reaching into the pass. Even though it has become an annual destination for me, the track and the snow are always different, the scenery is always breathtaking and each descent becomes unique and adrenaline-pumping... fun is guaranteed. In total, the height difference in height is about 1170m, the outing is free of any great technical difficulties with average slope in the valley of about 30° and touches of 40° points in the last stretch; crampons are unlikely to be needed. The slope is totally south-facing so late in the season or with poor snowfall you risk doing the initial stretch on foot with skis on your shoulders; a good training and a reasonable ski mountaineering experience are required.

I am a dynamic engineer, practitioner of extreme sports such as ski-mountaineering and mountaineering, but I also love endurance such as cycling and triathlon. With the soul of a motorcyclist, I have an unbridled passion for the mountains and I am a lover of dogs, in fact, my Duke always accompanies me.
