Covering does not always mean hiding; quite the opposite. In covering the Julian Alps, snow highlights all their splendour and emphasises their majesty.
Trekking in winter in the Tarvisio area is an experience that is not easily forgotten. How to enjoy this spectacle?
It is not necessary to know how to ski to enjoy the mountains in the winter season. You need only dress appropriately and have a pair of snowshoes, and do not forget to bring a map with you. You can also rent snowshoes for a solitary or group outing with a guide. (Info )
If you’re not keen on a classic snowshoe outing, which can be a little awkward where the snow has been compacted, you can use comfortable and light crampons to attach to trekking boots. That way you can avoid slipping on icy trails, and gain a sense of security and peace of mind. I also use trekking poles with snow terminals. They help me assure stability. Some also follow these trails on a Fat Bike (a mountain bike adapted for the snow). I have not done it yet, but it must be a lot of fun. Group outings are also organised with rented bikes.
I’ve always found the road from Valbruna (just a few kilometres from Tarvisio) to Val Saisera to be clear of snow and perfectly accessible, even after heavy snowfall. But winter tyres are indispensable. There are many car parks along the way, and we can start our hike from different points of the valley, going into the woods to our left and following the paths. The height difference is not demanding (about 150m in average, but it depends on where you decide to go and what route you do).
All that remains is to enjoy the spectacle in this unspoilt nature. Snow is of course master of all this landscape at the moment and like oil paint on canvas paints a natural picture in front of us. The landscape on show is well worth the effort expended in reaching it.
Welcome to Val Saisera!
