The
medieval church of San Giovanni in Tuba is evocative in its
late Gothic style. It is located in the heart of the Karst, in the area of the
Resurgence of the Timavo River, where the water flows out into the open and rich vegetation is the main protagonist.
The church was built at the behest of the
Lords of Duino, the Walsee family, between the beginning and middle of the 15th century. The building was heavily damaged during the World Wars and rebuilt in the late 1940s.
It was built with a
single nave and its interior can be visited: here visitors can admire the
polygonal apse and the
pointed arches typical of the Gothic style.
Under the church,
the remains of a Christian basilica have been discovered, the
mosaic floors of which can still be seen.
There was also a
pagan temple and a
monastery near the church, suggesting that the area was a place of
pilgrimage.
Duino offers several cultural and nature attractions such as the
Rilke Trail, the
Roman Quarries of Aurisina and
Duino Castle.
