Palazzo Werdenberg / Isontina State Library

The Palazzo Werdenberg, which today houses the Isontina State Library, was built in the seventeenth century.

The structure was chosen by the Jesuits as a cultural centre for the seminar.

In 1773, when the order of the Jesuits was suspended, Empress Maria Theresa of Austria devoted the structure to school use, so during the nineteenth century the palace housed the imperial-royal State high school specializing in classical studies.

During the First World War the Institute started the path of destination of use to which it still belongs. It became, in fact, the location of the ancient Library of the studies of the Jesuit schools and of the studies of the Austrian Monarchy.

The current book heritage consists of many volumes of local, regional and extra-regional interest, some of which also concern the areas near the territory that was defined with the term County of Gorizia, such as Istria, Slovenia and Dalmatia.

Of great architectural interest, besides the monumental staircase (one of the most precious Baroque works of art in Gorizia) are the eighteenth-century stuccos attributed to the school of architect Antonio Pacassi.

During the year art exhibitions, cultural meetings and conferences are hosted in the various rooms.
