Diego De Henriquez War Museum for Peace
The Diego de Henriquez War Museum for Peace is not only a basic war museum, but rather a "museum of 20th-century society at war" with its horrors and fears along a long and troubled path towards a necessary and hopefully everlasting peace.
Based on a private collection of approximately 15,000 catalogued items, this museum exhibition guides visitors through an all-round experience spanning the First and Second World Wars. The extensive documentation, which ranges from impressive, recently restored artillery pieces to diaries, letters, photographs, portraits and films, also benefits from the large exhibition space in the Hangars, which provides a venue for the permanent collection as well as areas for the study of material and the organisation of events and temporary exhibits.
The itinerary starts on the ground floor of the first Hangar, where the permanent exhibition "1914-1918 THE FUNERAL OF PEACE", entirely dedicated to the First World War, is presented. It opens with a restored funeral chariot, similar in size and style to the one that carried the bodies of the Hapsburg royal family assassinated in Sarajevo in 1914, followed by a rich display of artefacts from that period, with explanatory texts and videos that guide visitors along their journey. On the first floor, the focus is expanded to include a chronology of the 20th century that places Trieste at the centre of the two world wars until the return to Italy in 1954, intertwining with Henriquez's life. On the same floor, there is a room dedicated to events and temporary thematic exhibitions, which contributes to the vitality of a constantly evolving exhibition.
