Empire, stato del Nevada. Nel 1988 la fabbrica presso cui Fern e suo marito Bo hanno lavorato tutta la vita ha chiuso i battenti, lasciando i dipendenti letteralmente per strada. Anche Bo se ne è andato, dopo una lunga malattia, e ora il mondo di Fern si divide fra un garage in cui sono rinchiuse tutte le cose del marito e un van che la donna ha riempito di tutto ciò che ha ancora per lei un significato materico. Vive di lavoretti saltuari poiché non ha diritto ai sussidi statali e non ha l’età per riciclarsi in un Paese in crisi, e si sposta di posteggio in posteggio, cercando di tenere insieme il puzzle scomposto della propria vita.
